Start with the floor. Loose rugs, trailing cables and dim hallways cause more injuries at home than anything else. Secure or remove rugs, add night lights between bedroom and bathroom, and keep walking routes clear of furniture.
In the bathroom, grab rails beside the toilet and in the shower are the highest-value change you can make, followed by a shower chair and a non-slip mat. None of these need structural work and all of them are available as home-delivered items.
Set up a medication routine that does not depend on memory: a weekly pill organiser, a fixed time tied to a meal, and one family member who checks refills. A blood-pressure monitor and a thermometer at home save unnecessary trips and give teleconsultations something to work with.
Finally, plan the people, not just the equipment. Agree who visits when, keep emergency numbers printed and large near the phone, and consider scheduled nursing visits for tasks that need training — wound care, injections or physiotherapy — rather than stretching family members past what is safe.
